About Our Founder
A journey of identity, courage, freedom, and hope — and the story behind Safe LGBT Bangladesh.
MD MILON HOSSAIN
Founder, Safe LGBT Bangladesh
MD Milon Hossain founded Safe LGBT Bangladesh in 2018 with a clear and urgent mission: to create a support system for LGBTQ+ and queer people in Bangladesh who face discrimination, violence, and isolation. Recognizing the absence of formal support structures for LGBTQ+ people in Bangladesh, Milon built Safe LGBT Bangladesh as a nonprofit initiative offering safety resources, shelter referrals, health support, and legal assistance. His work is driven by the belief that every person — regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity — deserves to live with dignity, safety, and respect.
MD MILON HOSSAIN
Founder, Safe LGBT Bangladesh
Based in the Netherlands
MD Milon Hossain is the founder of Safe LGBT Bangladesh, a nonprofit initiative established in 2018 to support LGBTQ+ and queer people. His journey is one of personal courage, self-discovery, and the pursuit of safety and freedom.
A Personal Journey
As a gay man, LGBTQ+ activist, and ex-Muslim, Milon has faced significant personal challenges in Bangladesh. He experienced several physical attacks and death threats connected to his identity, beliefs, and activism. His decision to leave Islam and identify as an ex-Muslim is an important part of his personal journey. He believes that everyone should have the freedom to determine their own beliefs, identity, and way of life without fear of violence, persecution, or discrimination. Because of the threats and safety concerns he experienced, Milon eventually left Bangladesh to seek a safer life abroad.
A New Beginning in the Netherlands
Milon now lives in the Netherlands, a country widely recognized for its LGBTQ+ rights and protections. The Netherlands became the first country in the world to open civil marriage to same-sex couples in 2001. For Milon, living in the Netherlands represents an opportunity to pursue greater personal safety, dignity, and freedom while continuing to care about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people in Bangladesh. Although he is now living abroad, his commitment to the community remains an important part of his story.
The Founding of Safe LGBT Bangladesh
In 2018, Milon founded Safe LGBT Bangladesh with a mission to support LGBTQ+ and queer people who need safety information, shelter referrals, health resources, and legal assistance. The initiative aims to raise awareness, connect people with appropriate support, and encourage a future in which nobody has to face threats or isolation because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or personal beliefs.
Our Vision
We believe every person deserves:
- The freedom to choose and express their beliefs.
- Safety from violence, threats, and persecution.
- Dignity and respect regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
- Access to healthcare, legal information, and appropriate support.
- The opportunity to live without fear.
My journey has taught me how important safety, freedom, and dignity are. I believe that no one should have to hide who they are or live in fear because of their identity, beliefs, or activism. Through Safe LGBT Bangladesh, I hope to help LGBTQ+ people find information, support, and hope for a safer future.

This biography reflects the founder's personal account. Share only information that is safe for you to make public.
Safe LGBT Bangladesh began not as an organisation, but as a quiet act of necessity. Growing up in Bangladesh as an LGBT person means navigating a world that rarely acknowledges your existence — and when it does, often not with kindness. Our founder experienced this firsthand: the isolation, the fear, the desperate search for someone who understood.
After years of quietly supporting friends and strangers through private networks and word of mouth, our founder decided that something more permanent was needed. A place that was always there. A resource that did not disappear when a phone number changed or a safe house closed. A community that could grow.
Safe LGBT Bangladesh was founded on the belief that no one should have to search alone. That the information, support, and connection that can change — or save — a life should be accessible to anyone who needs it, wherever they are in Bangladesh.
A Bangladesh where every LGBT person knows they are not alone — and has somewhere safe to turn.
Our founder's vision extends beyond resources and helplines. It is a vision of a community that sustains itself — where those who were once searching become those who guide others, and where safety is not a privilege but a given.
